ART + LOVE
I don’t even know what this is going to be about yet but I am following a compulsion to show up as I am, with a half-formed idea and let the writing of it bring it into being. Much the same as when I paint.
Audience experience at ‘Paradise’
At Rapture, we’re trying to do a few things but the root of all of them is experience. In creative ways, we’re addressing the relationship between the viewer and the artwork, within the gallery context.
Relational Musings…
I use paint to understand the liminal reality that exists in relationship to our lived experience. I am interested in the stories we tell ourselves about what is true, particularly when it comes to personal relationships.
The Rapture Manifesto
Throughout May and June 2023, I co-curated Rapture, a multi-concept exhibition staged in both Brighton and Cornwall. Read on for our original manifesto…
A Wordless Story
One of my most primal fears, that brings me right up into my animal brain and triggers a profoundly physical fear response, is not knowing the story. Here I contrast this with the freedom of abstract expressionism.
Within and Without: A Show About ‘Home’
I was recently invited by artist and curator, Emily Stevens, to take part in an exhibition exploring the theme ‘Home’. I made all new work for this show, which featured many of the graduates from the RCA MA painting programme. Here I delve into the ideas behind this body of work.
Introducing ‘Inhabited Silence’
My new series of paintings is quite different to my last. Here I dive into the background to give some context to the paintings.
Appearing on ‘The Pointless Artist’ podcast
I am so happy to share with you that I was recently invited to be interviewed by Bianca Vinther, artist, curator and author of ‘The Pointless Artist’ blog and podcast series. It was a wonderful experience that made for a vivid and deep conversation about my relationship to art.
Seeking the Event
The word ‘moment’ comes up a lot in relation to my paintings. I have a series called ‘Moments of Truth’ and I talk about moments of encounter between viewer and painting. I want to say something about what these moments embody for me.
Who is the author of meaning?
How much can the artist be said to be the author of the meaning of their work? This is an interesting question because clearly the work hasn’t been made by anyone else. But if we explore a bit further, we can begin to understand that there are more sources of meaning than the person who put paint to canvas, or pen to paper.
Art as portal
This is what art does to me: it shatters the matrix.
Do you ever feel like you are sleepwalking in your life? Or wonder if this is it? Do you ever feel like life is ok but it is also kind of disappointing?
Let’s talk about authenticity…
I know that authenticity is a buzzword at the moment and you might be rolling your eyes reading this but I feel moved to address it in the context of being an artist, specifically.
What is My Subject?
I’m going to do something slightly different in this blog, by using a song as an entry point into describing my subject. So can my paintings be said to have a subject? Is that a property of abstract painting or is it purely wordless, existing outside the objective narrative that we apply to other art forms?
What is Process-Driven Painting?
Lots of people want to understand my paintings. They kind of like them but they want some kind of lead in to what they should be feeling, thinking and experiencing when they look at them.
